Advanced Electronics Sr. Firmware Engineer
The Firmware Engineer will be primarily responsible for the design and development of firmware that will drive innovative control systems, input technologies, sensors, connectivity, and graphical user interfaces in consumer appliances. As an integral member of the Global Technology Center (GTC) team, the successful candidate will provide the technical leadership and expertise in firmware development from conceptualization through production and across all product lines.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Firmware development for embedded systems, including debugging, testing and documentation.
Full software lifecycle for production projects as well as prototyping of technical solutions and demonstrators
Translate non-technical user requirements into specific engineering requirements and technical specifications
Perform functional tests of firmware modules, subsystems and applications using manual and automated software test tools following structured test plans, developed in conjunction with test engineer
Prepare required documentation, perform tests and prepare test documentation to get firmware approved for safety class as applicable.
Execute assigned activities within projects to create stable and reliable firmware solutions
Comply with internal software development process and external safety standards.
Work closely with the global GTC organization and specifically with the Advanced Electronics competence center in Porcia, Italy.
Working independently to identify blocking problems with other teams, and take the initiative to resolve them with little management intervention.
Work closely with hardware engineers to design and implement a complete technical solution
Research new technologies and enhance the company’s IP portfolio
Build and maintain internal- and external networks, e.g. product lines, external suppliers, institutes, universities, etc.
Follow the embedded firmware and IoT market, identifying new technologies and tools for firmware and connectivity development in the consumer market.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
MSc. or equivalent degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent field. Candidates with a BSc degree in combination with additional relevant experience will also be considered.
Minimum 10 years of relevant experience designing, coding and testing embedded firmware for control systems, using RTOS, embedded Linux, or custom kernels
Minimum 5 years as a lead technical developer, self-managing own projects to meet deadlines, mentoring others and interfacing cross functional teams to drive problems resolution
Strong design and programming experience using C/C++ for embedded software. Able to go into assembly language when needed.
Experience with ARM Cortex (32 bit), Microchip PIC, Freescale or other microprocessors, DSPs and development environments/tools.
Strong experience with structured software testing and validation techniques, troubleshooting and root cause analysis
Experience with UI frameworks like Qt, Crank, and with display technologies like LCD, TFT, OLED, touch panels.
Proven design/programming experience with IoT solutions and higher level languages such as C#, .NET, Java, JavaScript, Python
DESIRED:
Experience with communication buses like I2C, SPI, CAN bus, etc,
Experience developing communication systems, e.g. UARTs, RS234, RS422, RS485 etc. and wireless communication systems, e.g. WiFi, Bluetooth, Zigbee, WiMax and Cellular.
Experience with communication protocols like TCP, IP , etc., and USB, Ethernet controllers
Experience with Cybersecurity implementations to protect embedded systems
Able to read hardware schematics
Exposure to CMMI-type frameworks for software development, and Six-Sigma methodologies
Demonstrated ability to work with make files and linker files Database programming is a plus.
Electronics labs experience
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED:
Skilled in technical writing and using diagrams to describe solutions and architecture
Strong communications skills, both written and oral.
Self-motivated to resolve problems in creative ways, researching new technologies and standards
Demonstrated ability to learn new technologies and skills quickly, shifting direction to follow market changes
Strong team-player and can-do attitude. Able to work as a team member or individually when needed.
Dynamic and open minded.
Familiarity with ANSI, UL, CSA and IEC standards especially as they relate to consumer appliances are a plus.
Experience in a consumer appliance product R&D software environment is preferred
