This position is located in the Chinese Translation and Text Processing Section (CTTS) of the Conference Management Service (CMS), Division for Management (DM), United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV). The incumbent will report to the Chief of the Conference Management Service.
Within delegated authority, the Chief of the Chinese Translation and Text Processing Section will be responsible for the following duties:
• Organize the translation, revision and related activities of the Chinese Translation and Text Processing Section to ensure prompt delivery of documents of appropriate quality and quantity;
• Supervise, monitor and evaluate the performance of all regular and temporary staff in the Section;
• Oversee the day-to-day and long-term planning of work in the light of workload projections, including the appropriate recruitment of temporary staff;
• Make recommendations to the Chief of Service on policy matters relating to his/her Section, including appointment, promotion and training;
• Adjudicate between competing demands on the Section’s services, where necessary;
• Liaise with other sections and units to ensure optimum coordination;
• Encourage the introduction and use of modern technologies with a view to enhancing the efficiency of the documents workflow, as appropriate;
• Act as final arbiter on matters of language and terminology;
• Serve on examination boards for the recruitment of translators;
• Act as Deputy for the Chief, CMS, as required.
• Interact frequently with senior managers and staff within the Service, officials at Headquarters or of other duty stations and specialized agencies involved in translation matters, staff within the UN Secretariat, Missions Heads and other UN offices, funds, programmes and specialized agencies, representatives of Governments and non-governmental organizations, chairs and members of intergovernmental bodies.

Education:
Advanced degree from a university or an institution of equivalent status, or equivalent qualifications. Must have passed the United Nations Language Competitive Examination (LCE) for Chinese Translators.
Work Experience:
Minimum ten years of progressively responsible experience in translation and revision and/or in the provision of language or language-related services, preferably within the United Nations is required. Significant language-related management experience in international, regional or national institutions is highly desirable.
Languages:
Perfect command of Chinese together with an excellent knowledge of English and at least one other official language of the United Nations.
Assessment Method:
Written test and competency-based interview.
