Proofreader/Copy Preparer (English), P3

This position is located in the Electronic Publishing Unit (EPU), English, Publishing and Library Section (EPLS), Conference Management Service (CMS), Division for Management (DM), United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV). The incumbent will work under the direct supervision of the Chief of the Electronic Publishing Unit (EPU).

Responsibilities:

The Electronic Publishing Unit provides publishing services to the following offices and organizations based in the Vienna International Centre: United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, United Nations Office at Vienna, United Nations Commission on International Trade Law, United Nations Industrial Development Organization, United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs and United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation. Within assigned authority and under the direct supervision of the Chief, Electronic Publishing Unit, the incumbent will perform the following duties:

• Prepare technical specifications/style sheets and marks specifications on manuscript;
• Prepare electronic style sheets for formatting jobs internally in desktop publishing;
• Copy-prepare or copy-edit manuscripts of publications to verify grammar, syntax, accuracy, clarity, punctuation, spelling and conformity with established United Nations style;
• Copy-review publication projects to verify quality of clients’ submissions;
• Assure continuity of style in serially produced publications;
• Make corrections of spelling, grammar, style, typography or substantive errors;
• Read proofs against original manuscript to ensure that the digital artwork version is a true transcription of the text supplied for publishing production;
• Make corrections on PDF proofs;
• Check compliance with original typographic specifications;
• Check pagination, price, sales number, taglines and correlation of table of contents with listed items in text;
• Complete cross-references within text and footnotes;
• Check concordance of text with texts of other official languages to ensure typographical and substantive conformity;
• Perform other related duties as required.

Education:
A first-level degree from a university or institution of equivalent status. Candidates for this position must have passed the United Nations Competitive Examination for Copy Preparers/Proofreaders/Production Editors.

Work Experience:
Candidates for this position must have passed the United Nations Copy preparation and proof-reading examination and have a minimum of two years of experience in the United Nations publications production area. Experience in and familiarity with publishing production techniques, Adobe Creative Suite 6: Adobe InDesign and Microsoft Office is required.

Languages:
English proofreaders/production editors must have a perfect command of English, which must be their main language, and an excellent knowledge of at least two other official United Nations languages, preferably Spanish and/or French. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is desirable.

Assessment Method:
The assessment method will consist of an in-tray exercise as well as competency-based interview.

Candidates for this position must have passed the United Nations Competitive Examination for Copy Preparers/Proofreaders/Production Editors.
