This position is located in the Statistical Dissemination Section, Statistical Services Branch, Statistics Division, Department of Economic and Social Affairs. The statistician reports to the Chief of the Statistical Services Branch.

Responsibilities:

Under the overall supervision of the Statistical Services Branch Chief, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties:

• Plan, organize, manage and supervise the work of the Section.
• Initiate and coordinate the preparation and dissemination of general compilations of socio-economic statistics and indicators, including the Statistical Yearbook (SYB), the Monthly Bulletin of Statistics (MBS) and the MBS online, the World Statistics Pocketbook and special compilations and databases for reports to inter-governmental bodies as required.
• Plan and manage continuous updating of the relevant computer databases for these public dissemination products using available national and international sources.
• Ensure the quality of collected data for accuracy, consistency, comparability and timeliness. Review and guarantee the accuracy of data inputs, outputs and technical notes on concepts and methods.
• Undertake methodological research on standard concepts, definitions and classifications used in the data; prepare and maintain these and related metadata information in machine-readable form for use in the section’s compilation products.
• Maintain liaison with all the concerned international organizations and United Nations agencies for the above data compilations.
• Serve as liaison with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) to provide inputs and guidance on the country/area codes used and maintained in the United Nations Statistics Division for statistical purposes.
• Collaborate with the United Nations Publications, Sales and Marketing Section and the Dag Hammarskjold Library training programme for librarians on the promotion and dissemination of the Section’s statistical outputs, and to carry out user surveys and analyses, and provide technical support to users.
• Coordinate responses to ad hoc request for statistics data from other offices in the Secretariat, missions and governmental agencies, international and non-governmental organizations, academic and research institutions and the general public.
• Collaborate at the divisional, national and international levels on data quality assurance activities.
• Contribute to the preparation of the Division’s Publications Programme.
• Performs other duties as required.

Professionalism:

Education:
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in statistics, mathematics, economics, sociology or related field. A first-level university degree in combination with additional two years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience:
A minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in the collection, compilation, analysis and dissemination of statistical data or related area. Editorial or related experience in statistical compilation and dissemination is required. Experience in managing teams and supervising individuals is desirable.

Languages:
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.

Assessment Method:
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by a competency-based interview.

Special Notice:
